Birds
Birds are often some of the most colorful and gorgeous pets out there. They are also incredibly smart, with the ability to solve problems with multiple steps to them. The way they bond with people also makes them very jealous of others around their companion, human or bird.
Parrots
Myth
Parrots can talk like a person does.
Fact
Parrots don’t actually talk like they understand the words they are speaking. In reality they are mimicking words they like or have heard enough. They also don’t speak the words perfectly as you will hear a lot of rasp in their voice.
Myth
A bird's diet should consist mostly of seeds.
Fact
This is another stereotype that comes from the media. Seeds are filled with fats and don’t give birds enough nutrition to survive. A lot of pet bird foods are usually nothing but seed or seed mixed with some fruit and veggie pellets. The problem with these bags is that birds, like children, will pick out the seeds and not eat the healthy parts. Give a child a healthy meal with some chicken nuggets mixed in and they will probably just pick out the nuggets. Pet owners need to make sure they are paying attention to what their animals are eating and regulating them so they eat their healthy food too. If not they can become overweight and reduced lifespan of up to 10 years.
Myth
A bird's mother won’t accept it’s baby if touched by a human.
Fact
This myth is more prevalent for wild birds, but can still be parroted for pet birds too. A bird will not abandon it’s child if it has been touched by a human. The most common explanation for this myth is that a bird can smell the human scent on the chick. In reality, birds have a terrible sense of smell and possibly no sense at all.
